With school start dates just around the corner, parents can use the following tips to help their children succeed at school.
Be involved in school activities. This may be tricky for some busy parents, but the more involved a parent is, the more likely the child will succeed. If you cannot volunteer during class hours, then perhaps you can attend “parents’ night” activities or make food for a school event.
Get to know your child’s teacher(s). Attempt to meet them personally at the beginning of the school year. Try to attend all parent-teacher conferences and maintain open lines of communication with your child’s teacher/principal. You want them to know they can contact you immediately if any problem with your child arises.
Be supportive of at home learning. As parents, our comments influence heavily in the way our children view education, so attempt to show your child that you value education through positive comments. Attempt to generate enthusiasm for learning.
Communicate daily with your child. Listening and talking to your child is fundamental. Encouraging your child to talk about their thoughts, opinions and feelings, as well as teaching them to respectfully listen while others speak, will make them better equipped to follow directions and pay attention in school.
